Moving to Papua New Guinea: sponsored work and a safe arrival
An employment move needs both the correct work permission and immigration status. It also needs a realistic employer-supported plan for the exact worksite, housing, transport and medical evacuation. A visa does not establish that a placement is safe.

Separate the job approval from the visa
ICA distinguishes a private-sector work permit from the Working Resident Visa. The employer sponsors the process; obtain both approvals before travelling to start work. Public-service, diplomatic and other exemptions have specific boundaries, so a volunteer or aid-related job should not be assumed exempt.
Have HR identify the precise employer, occupation and location covered by the approval. Ask for the contract, professional-registration requirements and a named case owner. Treat the published ICA handbook as a starting point and confirm the current filing channel before paying an intermediary.
Make the worksite a feasibility decision
FCDO distinguishes the risks in Hela, Southern Highlands and Enga, including the Wabag exception, and warns about the Indonesia border and restricted access around the former Panguna mine. Read the current regional advice for the actual placement, not just Port Moresby.
Ask the employer for airport pickup, secure transport, incident contacts and arrangements if roads or flights stop. Do not accept a remote-site offer on salary alone: establish whether the housing, family presence and evacuation plan are workable before moving.
Apply for family status separately
ICA requires separate dependant entry applications. Its guidance distinguishes children ordinarily living in PNG from children studying overseas who visit during holidays. Principal and dependant validity are linked, and dependant residence should not be treated as permission to take a job.
Keep marriage, birth and custody evidence with the family, not only with the employer. Obtain school admission and support-needs confirmation before choosing housing. Ask whether the contract pays for family travel, school transport and temporary accommodation if the start date changes.
Agree treatment and evacuation before departure
FCDO describes very basic medical facilities and possible medicine or power shortages. Serious conditions may require evacuation to Australia. Check evacuation authorisation, receiving-country entry and how payment is made; a policy name alone does not answer these questions.
Discuss continuing treatment with your clinician and confirm medicine availability near the actual worksite. Keep a treatment summary and emergency contacts accessible to another household member. Include a contingency for a family member needing to leave before the principal worker.
Check housing and everyday transport together
Compare homes by the employer-approved journey to work, school and treatment. FCDO warns of serious crime in major cities and attacks on some public transport. A cheap lease can be a poor choice if safe daily transport cannot be arranged.
Record utilities, backup power, maintenance, security responsibilities and deposit terms in writing. Test phone and internet service at the address. Obtain the applicable licence and motor-insurance requirements before buying a vehicle; do not extrapolate a visitor driving allowance to every licence or length of stay.
Keep the financial record usable for renewal
Ask payroll who registers the tax identity, makes deductions and supplies annual records. ICA lists a tax-identification certificate among work-permit renewal evidence. Confirm banking identity, permit, address and source-of-funds requirements directly with the chosen bank.
Make a household budget from the actual contract: salary currency, housing deductions, school support, transport, insurance and return flights. These are negotiated costs, not a single national relocation allowance. Record overseas income and travel days for cross-border tax advice.
Do not transfer the permit to a new job
The work permission is tied to the approved employer and occupation; a new position or company needs the appropriate new application. Calendar visa, permit, contract and dependant expiries separately, with the sponsor responsible for explaining any bridging arrangement.
Before departure, preserve employment and tax records, arrange cancellation or transfer and close the housing agreement. Keep funds for an earlier exit: employment ending can affect the principal permission and the family status that depends on it.
