UK nurse to Australia: registration and migration roadmap
UK registration can support an NMBA pathway, but it does not automatically grant Australian registration, a skills assessment or a visa.

Clear three separate gates
NMBA decides whether you may practise; ANMAC provides migration skills assessments for relevant routes; Home Affairs decides the visa. An employer cannot substitute for any decision. Start with registration, then select the visa, then confirm whether that visa needs ANMAC.
Make the offer conditional on registration and work permission. Keep qualification, registration, employment, identity and English records consistent across all three files.
Test Pathway 1, Pathway 2 or the existing process
The NMBA standard effective 23 April 2025 has two streamlined routes. Pathway 1 covers applicants whose relevant qualification and general registration were obtained in an approved comparable jurisdiction. Pathway 2 covers applicants initially qualified elsewhere who later completed an approved comparable jurisdiction’s regulatory examination process and the specified practice there.
The UK is in the published comparable-jurisdiction material, but citizenship alone proves nothing. Download the standard, approved list, eligibility diagram and fact sheet. Applicants who do not meet either pathway remain under the existing internationally qualified nurse assessment process.
Prove every condition
Map qualification location, first registration, later examinations, registration history and practice dates. Request regulator verification or good standing in the required channel. All applicants still meet core standards including English, criminal history, recency and professional indemnity arrangements; do not infer an English exemption from a British passport.
ANMAC is not a practice licence. Match its assessment type to the nominated occupation and live visa criteria. Budget and schedule regulator, assessment and visa steps separately.
| Evidence | NMBA action | Migration action |
|---|---|---|
| Comparable qualification and registration | Test Pathway 1 | Choose visa, then ANMAC type |
| Qualification elsewhere plus comparable exam and practice | Test Pathway 2 | Keep assessment evidence separate |
| Neither | Existing IQNM process | Do not predict outcome |
| Offer only | Registration before practice | Confirm lawful visa |
Run a document-controlled application
Create an evidence matrix with the NMBA clause, required document, issuing body, dispatch method and date received. Use the exact name shown on your passport and explain previous names consistently. Ask former regulators and employers whether they must send evidence directly; a scan held by the applicant may not satisfy independent verification.
Do not resign or book non-refundable travel from an eligibility self-check. Wait for the regulator and immigration decisions required for your role, and read any conditions on the registration record. If NMBA requests further information, answer against the numbered request and retain the complete submission.
Convert approval into a safe employment start
Give the employer the registration outcome, visa conditions and realistic arrival date. Confirm the employing state, clinical setting, classification, hours, supervision or orientation, roster and whether registration must be active before onboarding. Professional registration does not guarantee a particular grade or recognition of every year of NHS experience.
After arrival, preserve payslips, duty statements and continuing professional development records for registration renewal and later migration evidence. Report employer, address or passport changes through the authority that controls that record rather than assuming one update reaches NMBA, ANMAC and Home Affairs.
