Moving to Slovenia: a practical relocation guide

Slovenia separates immigration permission from residence-address registration, payroll, health insurance and tax. EU free movement and third-country single-permit cases must be planned on different branches.

Start from nationality and the work pattern

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens may enter under free movement and apply for a residence registration certificate if staying longer than three months. Third-country nationals need an appropriate residence basis; local employment commonly uses the single permit and highly qualified work may fit the EU Blue Card.

Slovenia's digital-nomad temporary permit has applied since 21 November 2025. It is for qualifying remote activity rather than Slovenian employment and is issued for up to one year without extension; a new application follows only after a six-month interval.

Register the real address within eight days

A foreign national issued a temporary permit or long-stay visa must register temporary residence within eight days of entering, receiving the document or taking up residence. The administrative unit accepts ownership evidence, a lease or sublease, or owner or accommodation-manager consent.

Make the lease identify the apartment and occupants. A registered address is also the official-correspondence address; preserve the registration certificate and update it after a move.

Confirm the single-permit work conditions

The Employment Service participates in the single-permit process for third-country workers. Confirm the approved employer, occupation and start conditions before working; an application or visa-free stay does not replace the permit.

EU citizens working or self-employed use the free-movement branch and can evidence that activity for residence registration. Dependants need their own status even when the principal's job supplies the household income.

Activate insurance and tax records on the correct basis

Compulsory health-insurance registration depends on the legal basis, commonly employment or insured family-member status. Ask the employer to confirm its filing with ZZZS and keep other cover until active entitlement is verified for each person.

Obtain a Slovenian tax number where required and use FURS rules for tax residence rather than the residence-card label. Keep travel days and records of foreign income, homes and company interests.

Prepare dependants for separate systems

Family reunification eligibility and timing depend on the sponsor's status; do not assume the principal permit documents the spouse or child. Bring legalised and translated relationship records where required.

Contact the local school with proof of address, prior reports and language needs. Slovenia provides schooling through the public system, but placement and recognition of completed foreign education are separate decisions.

Finish banking, driving and renewal deliberately

Banks determine their own passport, permit, address, tax-residence and source-of-funds checks. Compare whether onboarding is possible before the residence card arrives; an account does not prove lawful work.

Driving rules depend on whether the licence is EU/EEA or from a third country. Check recognition or exchange before relying on it long term, and start permit renewal before expiry while employer, address and insurance evidence remain current.
