Moving to Svalbard: a practical relocation guide
Svalbard requires no Norwegian visa, work permit or residence permit, but that is not an open-ended welfare right. Every newcomer must be self-supporting and should secure both work and housing before arrival; the Governor may reject or expel a person who cannot meet the stay conditions.

Understand what permit-free actually means
Norway's Immigration Act does not apply to Svalbard, so foreigners do not need a Norwegian visa or work and residence permit for the archipelago. Everyone still needs a valid travel document and must meet Svalbard's self-support rules.
Most routes pass through mainland Norway. A visa-required traveller needs Schengen permission for that transit and normally a double-entry visa to return through the mainland.

Secure both a job and housing before travel
The Governor does not arrange work. Much housing is owned by employers and supplied with jobs; ordinary private supply is limited and the state owns practically all land.
Get the employment and accommodation terms in writing, including what happens to the home when the job ends. Budget for a rapid departure if either arrangement fails.
Check population-register eligibility
A person planning to live in Svalbard for at least six months may need registration in the Svalbard population register under the Tax Administration rules. This is separate from mainland Norwegian residence permission and does not create one.
Ask the employer and Tax Administration about an identification number, payroll withholding and reporting before the first salary.
Do not assume mainland welfare coverage
Health and social-security rights depend on membership and employment, not simply presence in Svalbard. Longyearbyen Hospital has limited services and serious cases require evacuation to the mainland.
Confirm insurance, evacuation cover, prescriptions and dependant eligibility before moving. Pregnancy, chronic illness and specialist care require specific planning with the provider.
Plan school and family support around capacity
A child's access to school or kindergarten and a partner's ability to remain self-supporting should be confirmed with Longyearbyen local government before travel. Permit-free entry does not guarantee housing or municipal service capacity.
Banking, parcels and identity checks can depend on Norwegian identifiers. Ask providers what they accept rather than using a mainland residence-card checklist.
Treat polar safety as part of relocation
Travel outside settlements carries polar-bear, avalanche, weather and communications risks. Follow the Governor's current rules and guidance; firearms, field travel, camping and protected areas can trigger specific requirements.
If work or housing ends, reassess the self-support requirement immediately. Svalbard residence time does not itself count as mainland Norwegian residence or create a path to citizenship.
