Moving to Trinidad and Tobago: permission and practical setup
Most non-national employment needs a work permit. Qualifying CARICOM skilled nationals use a separate certificate route, while residence remains an Immigration decision.

Choose the correct labour-mobility basis
The Ministry says non-national employment generally needs a permit, subject to a narrow statutory short-duration rule. CSME access requires an eligible category and certificate; CARICOM nationality alone is not enough.
| Plan | Route | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Employment | Work Permit | Online permit process |
| CARICOM skilled work | CARICOM Skills Certificate (Free Movement) | Eligible category and certificate |
| Spouse residence | Residence as Spouse of a Citizen or Resident | Separate residence application |
Prepare work and residence evidence
Keep passport, police, medical, job, qualification and civil records from the current authority checklist. Preserve entry stamps and application confirmations; a pending case is not permission to work.
Choose Trinidad or Tobago deliberately
The islands differ in jobs, transport, schools and specialist healthcare. Inspect storm and flood exposure, utilities, internet, inventory and lease terms before payment.
Connect NIS, BIR and banking
Confirm National Insurance registration and the Board of Inland Revenue number needed for the activity. Reconcile the first payslip and keep a fallback payment route during bank checks.
Verify healthcare and school access
Confirm public, employer and private care for each dependant and retain evacuation cover until limits are clear. Ask Education about placement, vaccination and prior-school records.
Finish licence, Customs and pet steps
Confirm the resident licence process before driving. Obtain Customs treatment for household goods or a vehicle and animal-health clearance before a pet travels.
