Moving to the United States: a practical relocation guide
A U.S. move is two projects at once: securing a federal immigration basis and choosing a state and city whose housing, healthcare, tax and transport systems work for the household. Fix the destination before signing long contracts, because many daily-life rules are state or local rather than national.

Choose a status that permits the life you intend
A visitor admission is not a relocation route and does not create permission to take U.S. employment. Start with the activity: sponsored employment, an intracompany transfer, study, a qualifying family relationship, exceptional ability or investment. Some routes are nonimmigrant and tied to a specific purpose or employer; others lead to lawful permanent residence. The petition, visa and admission record are separate stages, so keep the approval notice, visa, passport entry evidence and electronic I-94 together.
Do not resign, ship a household or sign a non-cancellable lease merely because a petition has been filed. Confirm who sponsors each family member, whether dependants may work, the date employment may start, and what must be reported after a job, school or relationship change. VisaAtlas has verified route pages for H-1B, L-1A, EB-2 NIW, F-1 and the spousal green-card process.
| Situation | Route to investigate | Dependency to resolve before moving |
|---|---|---|
| Specialist hired by a U.S. employer | H-1B Specialty Occupation | Employer petition, cap treatment where applicable and authorised start date |
| Manager transferring within a group | L-1A Intracompany Transferee (Executive or Manager) | Qualifying overseas and U.S. entities plus the required prior employment |
| Professional proposing work of national importance | EB-2 National Interest Waiver (NIW) | Underlying EB-2 eligibility and a separate plan for immigrant-visa processing or adjustment |
| Academic student | F-1 Student Visa (with OPT and STEM OPT) | SEVP-certified school, Form I-20 and strict limits on employment |
| Spouse of a citizen or permanent resident | Spouse of US Citizen or Green Card Holder (IR1/CR1 & F2A) | Sponsor category, consular versus adjustment process and financial sponsorship |
Choose the state before finalising the budget
Model the actual county and commute, not a national average. Compare rent, required deposits, renter insurance, state and local income or sales taxes, health-plan premiums and deductibles, childcare, school boundaries, car insurance, parking and utility deposits. A lower advertised rent can be offset by two cars or an expensive health plan. Keep a relocation reserve separate from the cash intended for a rental deposit.
Use temporary accommodation while checking neighbourhood noise, travel time, flood or wildfire exposure, mobile coverage and the condition of the unit. Before paying, verify the owner or authorised manager, read the entire lease, photograph the inventory, identify who pays each utility and obtain written rules on repairs, renewal, early termination, pets and subletting. Tenant protections, deposit rules and eviction procedure depend on state and locality, so use the relevant government housing or consumer office rather than assuming one U.S.-wide rule.
- Price the same health plan for every household member and check the local provider network.
- Test the commute at the hours you will actually travel.
- Check the assigned public school with the district, not a property advert.
- Keep the signed lease, move-in condition record and every payment receipt.
Build the identity and banking chain
First verify the I-94 record and the mailing address used for immigration documents. A work-authorised person may already have requested a Social Security number through an immigration process; otherwise follow Social Security Administration instructions and avoid duplicate applications. An SSN is not proof of immigration status or work authorisation. People who need a U.S. taxpayer number but are not eligible for an SSN may need an ITIN for federal tax purposes.
Banks set their own onboarding and address-evidence rules. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau states that an account may be possible without an SSN and that institutions may accept an ITIN, passport number, alien identification number or another government-issued identifier. Ask for the exact document list before visiting, compare monthly fees and transfer limits, and keep the old account operating until salary, rent, cards and recurring bills have been tested. Build U.S. credit deliberately; overseas credit history normally does not simply become a U.S. file.
Treat health, tax and employment as separate checks
Do not leave health insurance until after arrival. Obtain the employer plan summary or compare Marketplace cover, confirm the effective date, network, deductible, prescription rules and coverage during any waiting period. HealthCare.gov says lawfully present immigrants can obtain Marketplace coverage, but eligibility for savings, Medicaid or CHIP depends on income, status, state and other conditions. A visa or green card does not by itself make every public programme available.
For tax, record every U.S. presence day from the first trip in the relevant three-year window. The IRS substantial-presence test counts all current-year days, one third of prior-year days and one sixth from the second prior year, subject to exclusions and exceptions. Immigration residence and tax residence are different tests. Determine federal filing, state residence, payroll withholding, overseas asset or account reporting and treaty positions before moving investments or exercising share options.
Match the job to the permission granted. Employer-specific status can make a role, worksite or employer change immigration-sensitive. Secure written confirmation before starting side work, freelancing or remote work for an overseas business. Also check professional licensing with the state board before assuming a foreign qualification permits practice.
Finish state, family and pet administration
Driver licensing and vehicle registration are state services. Use USA.gov to reach the official motor-vehicle agency for the destination state, then check how quickly a new resident must apply, which identity and residence documents are accepted, whether testing is required and when insurance must begin. Do not assume an international permit converts into a state licence or that one state’s rule applies in another.
For children, contact the school district serving the actual address and ask for enrolment, age, vaccination, language-support and prior-record requirements. Keep birth, custody and school documents available; immigration status, school admission and a parent’s work permission are separate questions. For pets, use the USDA import selector and, for dogs, the linked CDC requirements, then add the receiving state’s rules. Species, origin, rabies-risk history and route can change the required documents.
A sensible first-month order is: verify admission records; secure health coverage; validate the address and lease; request the SSN if needed; open and test banking; complete employer onboarding and payroll forms; check federal and state tax residence; apply for the state licence when required; enrol children; and retain a dated renewal file for every family member.
Sources and checks
The linked authorities set the rules. VisaAtlas explains how the steps fit together; planning suggestions are not a decision on your immigration status, tax residence or entitlement to services.
