Moving to Vanuatu: residence, work and island planning
Match the move to employment, family, self-funded residence or an approved investment basis. A Vanuatu residence permission does not automatically authorise any job or business, and a workable health and evacuation plan should come before a long housing commitment.

Match permission to the actual activity
The Immigration Department lists employee, partner, child, self-funded, foreign-investor and leasehold grounds for residence. Each is a distinct eligibility basis. Owning a lease, holding savings or having an overseas client does not remove the need for the appropriate permission.
For a local job, the work visa and Labour work permission must align with the employer and activity. The Department’s work guidance also separates short-term employment, specialist assignments, religious work and development-supported roles. Ask the sponsor to confirm the exact class and application sequence rather than choosing a visitor visa because it is simpler.
Agree what the sponsor and family must provide
Prepare the job offer or investment/residence evidence before shipping belongings. Ask for the employer’s legal identity, signed terms, work location, accommodation contribution, insurance and return-travel arrangement. Keep copies of approvals independently of an agent or employer.
The residence guidance permits eligible spouses or de facto partners and dependent children to be included, subject to the relevant conditions. Inclusion in residence is not an automatic unrestricted work right. Confirm the evidence and activity permitted for each person and arrange school admission directly before treating a family move as settled.
Choose the island around services
A Port Vila move and an outer-island assignment need different transport, healthcare and communications plans. Ask the employer how you would reach the workplace, obtain supplies and leave during disruption. Inspect the actual building and access road rather than comparing advertised rent alone.
Put the lease, repairs, utilities, inventory, deposit and early-departure terms in writing. Identify a safe place and contact method for earthquake, tsunami or cyclone warnings. For a remote role, make reliable power and communications an explicit contract and housing question, not an assumption.
Plan treatment beyond routine appointments
Official travel advice describes basic, limited facilities, with primary-care clinics in Port Vila and serious cases potentially requiring evacuation to Australia or New Zealand. Check coverage for a long stay, your occupation, existing conditions and the evacuation destination.
Ask a clinician to plan prescription continuity and the care needed by children or other dependants. Keep emergency funds and the insurer’s authorisation contact accessible. A medical document accepted for immigration does not prove that your treatment is available locally.
Separate residence funds from spendable moving cash
Self-funded and leasehold residence use defined resources evidence; the Immigration Department may require bank certification and different amounts depending on the household or an older protected category. Obtain the current branch-specific checklist rather than recycling a mover’s universal savings figure.
Budget separately for application costs, flights, temporary housing, deposits, freight, insurance and emergency transport. Ask a bank about identification, address, tax-residence and source-of-funds checks before moving all savings. Residence permission does not resolve tax obligations in another country or authorise a new local business.
Check the issued record and practical permissions
On arrival, match the passport, visa, permitted activity, employer and expiry to the approval. Obtain the sponsor’s written confirmation of any remaining work-permit or registration step before starting. Use your actual grant dates, not the dates generated by a planning calendar.
Confirm the driving licence and insurance appropriate to your stay with the local authority and insurer. Ask the destination authority and carrier for pet and goods import rules before shipment. Keep the documents needed for onward travel, urgent treatment or a changed assignment separate from shipped luggage.
Preserve the basis on which residence was granted
The work conditions require continuing the approved employment and reporting significant personal or financial changes. Do not assume a visa for one employer or activity can be used for freelance work, a different business or another employer.
Review permit expiry, family status and the evidence for the residence ground before renewal or an extended absence. Permanent residence and citizenship require their own assessment; neither follows simply from purchasing property or finishing an employment contract.
