UK announces capped refugee sponsorship routes for communities, universities and employers
By Sam Parks · Last reviewed:
The Home Office has announced new capped safe-and-legal refugee sponsorship routes, with community and university sponsorship expected first and employer sponsorship expected later.
What changed
- The announced framework is expected to let approved community groups, universities and businesses sponsor eligible refugees to come to the UK.
- Reporting says the university route is expected to open for applications later in 2026, with first arrivals in 2027.
- A refugee work route allowing employers to sponsor refugees is expected from 2027, but final Immigration Rules and sponsor criteria have not yet been published.
- The Home Office is expected to work with UNHCR on eligibility, and applicants will be subject to background checks before travel.
