Overview

The L permit is designed for temporary work assignments, project-based contracts, and seasonal work lasting up to 12 months. It draws from a separate federal quota pool (approximately 4,000 L permits/year for third-country nationals). Like the B permit, it requires employer sponsorship and a labour-market test. L permits do not lead directly to settlement and cannot be converted to B permits — a new application is required. The L permit is commonly used for intra-company transferees on short assignments, consultants, and project specialists.

For L Permit — Short-Term Residence (Kurzaufenthaltsbewilligung), use the actual decision and the issuing authority’s instructions to establish what has been granted. A successful application, permission to enter, permission to work and a residence document are not interchangeable.

1. Check the decision. Confirm the name, passport, status granted, start date and any next action. Resolve an error with the authority before relying on the document for travel or employment.
2. Establish the travel step. Read any entry window, activation, collection or in-country registration instruction. For an extension or change of status, do not assume leaving the country is required or safe while a further step remains pending.
3. Confirm what you may do. Agree the lawful start date and onboarding with the employer or sponsor. Check whether the permission names an employer, role or activity before changing the arrangement.
4. Organise the household. Check each accompanying person’s permission separately, then arrange healthcare, accommodation, access to money and the relevant local registrations. A tax number or bank account does not by itself prove a right to work.
5. Keep the ongoing conditions visible. Record the actual expiry, renewal process, permitted absences and any duty to report changes. An initial grant does not automatically establish permanent residence or citizenship.

Can an L permit be converted to a B permit?+

No. The L permit cannot be directly converted to a B permit. If you want to stay in Switzerland beyond the L permit duration for long-term employment, your employer must file a completely new B permit application — including a fresh labour-market test and quota check. The L permit time does not count toward the B/C permit residence requirements.

Is the L permit quota separate from the B permit quota?+

Yes. Switzerland maintains separate annual quotas for B permits and L permits for third-country nationals. An exhausted B permit quota does not affect L permit availability, and vice versa. However, both quotas are limited and competitive.

Does time on a short-term L permit count toward Swiss permanent residence?+

No. The L permit does not lead to settlement and its time does not count toward the B or C permit residence requirements. It also cannot be converted to a B permit, so a long-term stay needs a completely new B permit application with a fresh labour-market test and quota check.
