Moving to Argentina: residence and arrival guide

Argentina’s residence approval, DNI, labour or tax identifiers and service registrations are distinct. Sequence them around consistent civil documents and a usable local address.

Choose the residence category

Mercosur nationality, contracted work, qualifying independent income, investment, foreign remote work and family reunion use different residence categories. Migraciones separates transitory, temporary and permanent admission: transitory status is for specified short activities and does not lead to a DNI; temporary residence can support a temporary DNI; permanent residence supports a permanent DNI.

Digital-nomad residence is transitory rather than a generic path to permanent residence. The migrant-worker route needs the required employer and contract evidence. Check every dependant separately and do not treat property, a tax number or a local bank account as immigration status.

Prepare civil records and RadEx evidence

Obtain passport, birth, marriage, police, custody and qualification records before departure. Check apostille or legalisation, official Spanish translation and whether Argentine certification is required. Resolve spelling and parentage differences before filing.

Keep originals, entry evidence, RadEx receipts and appointment confirmations outside freight. Determine which address and police evidence applies and what document proves lawful status while the residence or DNI is pending.

Move from RADEX to DNI and CUIL

Start an in-country residence through RADEX, upload the category evidence and monitor the email account used in the file: Migraciones sends the appointment after the online submission. Keep the resulting residence or precaria evidence. A foreign national with current temporary or permanent residence can then obtain the DNI; regularise the residence first if it is expired or close to expiry.

CUIL is the labour and social-security identifier. ANSES distinguishes the evidence for foreigners who have Argentine identity documents from those who do not, so do not wait until a first payroll run to identify the applicable process. Independent or taxable activity may instead require CUIT and registration with ARCA. Keep names and addresses identical across DNI, CUIL or CUIT.

Contract housing carefully

Use temporary housing while comparing transport, building expenses, utilities, internet and neighbourhood conditions. Verify owner or authorised agent, inventory, guarantee, deposit, adjustment, notice and currency clauses.

Keep the signed contract, payments, condition photographs and meter readings. Ask whether it supplies domicilio evidence for DNI, banking and services. Do not rely on informal exchange or payment arrangements without a written, verified counterparty.

Plan banking, tax and exchange compliance

Tax residence is not decided solely by obtaining a DNI. Record entry, travel, income, assets and overseas accounts and seek advice before changing how foreign or remote income is paid. Employees should reconcile payroll, CUIL and contributions.

Banks set identity, residence, tax and funds requirements. Keep another payment method during onboarding and use Central Bank information to verify regulated entities. Exchange controls can change; use authorised channels and current official guidance rather than an old rate or forum workaround.

Establish a health pathway under the 2026 rules

Do not rely on older claims that routine public care is universally free for every newcomer. Resolution 1066/2026 applies at national-government hospitals: emergency assessment and immediate treatment must not be delayed by administrative or payment steps, while a foreign patient without permanent residence must show qualifying insurance or prepay for non-urgent care. Permanent residents prove status with a current foreigner DNI; if that DNI is lost or its renewal is pending, the resolution permits the specified RADEX certificate plus a current passport. Provincial rules and employment-based obra social are separate.

Before travel, verify what your residence status, province and employer actually provide; keep insurance until enrolment is confirmed. Bring vaccination, prescription and clinical records, identify local primary and emergency care and plan medicine continuity. Dependants should verify their own enrolment rather than assuming the employee’s onboarding completed it.

Coordinate employment and school

Before work, confirm the residence category, employer registration, contract and CUIL support the onboarding. Regulated professions may require recognition. Preserve payslips and contribution history.

Contact the provincial or city school authority about placement, address, birth, vaccination and translated academic records. Family residence needs relationship evidence; a partner’s work and tax setup remains individual.

Handle driving, pets and renewals

Licence rules are administered locally within the national framework. Check recognition, exchange or testing with the jurisdiction of residence before driving; vehicle import and registration are separate.

Pets need SENASA health requirements and carrier approval. Track residence and DNI validity, passport expiry, tax filing, licence action and changes of address, work or family circumstances.
