Moving to Bahrain: a practical relocation guide

Most Bahrain employees need an LMRA work permit obtained before arrival, followed by medical and biometric completion and an active residence and ID record. Golden and other self-sponsored residence categories are separate; the Registered Worker permit is a restricted in-country route, not a freelance visa for visitors.

Distinguish employer, independent and in-country routes

An expatriate recruited for a Bahrain job must have the official employer work permit before arrival and may not work on a visit visa. Golden Residency and qualifying family or student residence are separate immigration bases; a residence permit alone does not authorise any employer or occupation.

The former flexible-permit idea should not be presented as an open self-sponsored visa. LMRA's Registered Worker permit is for an eligible worker already in Bahrain with a terminated work permit; visit-visa holders are excluded. It therefore cannot support a newcomer planning to arrive and freelance.

Verify the permit before boarding

Match the signed offer to the LMRA permit: employer, occupation, work location, salary, allowances, insurance and family support. LMRA says the employer bears work-permit and health-insurance fees and that the worker should not pay in exchange for issuance or renewal. Keep the permit and contract references independently.

Prepare passport, qualification and regulated-profession records plus authenticated marriage, birth and school documents. Family sponsorship is income- and eligibility-based and is filed through the employer system for covered workers, so confirm the current live criteria before moving dependants.

Complete medical, biometrics and the ID chain

Follow the LMRA arrival appointment for medical examination and biometric data. LMRA instructs first-time permit holders to provide biometrics within one month of entry. Do not begin a different occupation or worksite because the residence entry is visible; use only the job and place authorised by the permit.

When the CPR or ID record is active, verify name, personal number, employer, occupation, address and permit validity. The ID and correct residential address unlock many services, but they are not replacements for a current work permit.

Build a complete dependant file

Each dependant needs a current residence record. The LMRA family service covers spouses and dependants within the current age and income conditions; other direct relatives may use separate NPRA services. A dependant who will work needs the specific work approval or employer permit before starting.

Bahrain's health-insurance law obliges an employer to insure non-Bahraini workers; dependant coverage by the employer depends on the employment contract, otherwise the sponsor has responsibilities. For a child arriving from abroad, private-school registration uses valid residence, passport and ID plus authenticated prior academic records or an apostille where accepted.

Make the lease usable for the CPR address

Before signing, identify how the electricity account and residential address will be registered. Bahrain's ID rules require a correct residential address and can require an active electricity account in the tenant's name or a municipality address certificate where the lease leaves it with the landlord. Put this cooperation into the lease.

Record inventory, meters, maintenance, municipal charges, notice and deposit. Once the address and CPR are active, ask banks for their specific identity, employer, address and tax-residency evidence. Preserve statements for salary and rent; having an account does not prove immigration or work compliance.

Protect wages and transfer timing

Compare every salary credit with the contract and retain payslips. The employer is responsible for permit fees, and the 2026 fee schedule should not be passed to the worker contrary to LMRA rules. Raise missing pay or document retention through LMRA support rather than paying an intermediary to regularise status.

For a transfer, LMRA tells the worker to stop working for the current employer until the process is complete and a new permit has been issued under the new employer. A six-month commercial work-permit option introduced in 2025 is limited to expatriates already in Bahrain and is not recruitment permission from abroad.

Resolve driving, pets and cross-border tax

Residents can request evaluation of a foreign driving licence for replacement. Eligibility depends on the issuing country and current rules, and the official process requires a valid foreign licence, CPR, vision test and cleared restrictions. Confirm the result before buying a vehicle.

Individuals importing live animals or birds must use the Ministry of Municipalities and Agriculture personal import-permit service; endangered species can need separate CITES approval. Obtain current species, microchip, vaccination and certificate requirements before transport. For tax planning, verify home-country residence, business and investment obligations instead of relying on a blanket “tax-free salary” description.

Update address, renew and close status

Calendar passport, work permit, residence, CPR, family permits and insurance separately. When moving home, update the residential address through the employer or ID service and retain the accepted proof. Renew before expiry; the employer can renew an eligible work permit while the employee is abroad only through the defined process.

Before final departure or a sponsor change, collect the final salary and service records, settle the lease and utilities, and obtain evidence of LMRA cancellation or transfer plus dependant-residence handling. A cancelled work permit can place family records at risk, so sequence the whole household rather than only the employee.
