Overview
The family / dependant residence permit allows an expatriate already resident in Bahrain to sponsor immediate family members such as a spouse and dependent children, and in some cases parents. Residence services are split between the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) for many employee-dependant cases and the Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA) for several family and self-sponsored routes. The sponsor must meet salary and accommodation conditions and provide authenticated relationship documents. Dependants on a family permit are generally not permitted to work unless they move to their own work permit. This is a temporary, sponsor-linked status and does not lead to permanent settlement.

Frequently asked questions
Can my family work on a Bahrain dependant residence permit?+
Generally no. Spouses and grown-up children on a family permit, and students on a student permit, are not permitted to work unless they change to their own work permit. Confirm the current rules on the official NPRA page.
What do I need to sponsor my family in Bahrain?+
You typically need to meet salary and accommodation conditions and provide authenticated marriage and birth certificates, salary evidence and valid health insurance. Residence services are split between the NPRA and LMRA depending on the category. Confirm the current document list and which authority applies on the official NPRA page.
Do I need to already live in Bahrain before I can sponsor my spouse and children?+
Yes. The family/dependant residence permit lets an expatriate who already holds a valid Bahraini residence permit sponsor immediate family such as a spouse and dependent children, provided you meet the salary and accommodation conditions. Confirm the current rules on the official NPRA page.
Can I sponsor my parents to live with me in Bahrain, or only my spouse and children?+
The family/dependant residence permit allows an expatriate resident to sponsor immediate family such as a spouse and dependent children, and in some cases parents. Sponsoring eligible dependent parents is possible but conditional, so confirm whether your parents qualify on the official NPRA page.
