Moving to Benin: permission, arrival and practical setup

Benin’s official eVisa portal publishes short entry products only. None should be represented as a relocation or employment permit; a prospective employer or host must confirm the separate long-stay, residence and labour process directly with the competent Beninese authorities.

Separate entry, residence and work permission

Benin’s official eVisa portal publishes short entry products only. None should be represented as a relocation or employment permit; a prospective employer or host must confirm the separate long-stay, residence and labour process directly with the competent Beninese authorities.

A visa waiver, visitor visa or business-visitor permission is not an open right to take employment or provide local services. Remote work also needs an immigration, labour and tax analysis unless the authority publishes a route that expressly covers it.

Complete the arrival record

Carry the official eVisa and comply with its entry period while starting only the authorised visit. Do not accept work or ship a household until written confirmation of the residence and employment process is obtained.

Inspect names, passport number, sponsor or purpose, permitted activity and expiry on every issued record. Keep the approval, receipt and a copy of the entry stamp outside the passport.

Make housing support the move

Cotonou, Porto-Novo and northern locations differ in commute, flooding, healthcare and security. Use short accommodation until the legal long-stay path and real workplace are confirmed.

Verify landlord authority, lease language, deposit, inventory, utilities, internet and early-exit terms. Keep the real address and payment trail for immigration, banking and employer files.

Set up banking, payroll and tax evidence

Delay long-term banking and asset moves until residence eligibility is evidenced. Keep all payroll, business, tax and foreign-transfer records and obtain local advice before working.

Ask the bank and tax authority for their live identity, permit, address, tax-number and source-of-funds requirements. Immigration status alone does not determine tax residence: retain travel days, payslips, foreign income and business invoices.

Plan each family member and essential service

Do not infer dependant or school rights from the principal’s eVisa. Confirm family residence, school admissions, healthcare and adult work permission in writing.

A dependant, student or family residence document should not be treated as an adult work permit without confirmation. Carry legalised civil records, prescriptions, vaccination records and prior-school reports.

Control renewal, changes and current risk

An eVisa extension or repeated visit is not a substitute for residence. Current advice contains serious northern-border warnings, so screen the exact destination and insurer before any move.

Read current official travel advice for Benin, the exact region and any overland route before travel. Confirm that insurance covers the location and planned work.
