Moving to Indonesia: stay permits, sponsorship and local setup
A KITAS describes limited stay; it does not by itself authorise every kind of work. Align the sponsor, permitted activity and manpower approval, inspect what immigration issued at entry, then coordinate address, tax, health, payroll and family records.

Match the sponsor, stay permit and activity
Indonesia separates the immigration permission to stay from authority to perform work. A work KITAS route needs employer and manpower steps suited to the position. Investor, family, student and second-home statuses have different sponsors and activity boundaries; a family KITAS should not be treated as unrestricted employment permission. Permanent stay through KITAP is a later qualifying status, not an automatic first-arrival product.
Remote work also needs an immigration route that expressly fits the facts. Do not assume tourist, visit, family or investor status permits paid work for Indonesian customers. Ask the sponsor and immigration office to identify the current visa code, permitted activities, validity, entries and any manpower authorisation before travel.
| Plan | VisaAtlas route | Decision boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Work for an Indonesian employer | Work KITAS (Limited Stay Permit) | The stay permit and manpower approval must match the employer and position |
| Act as a qualifying investor | Investor KITAS (Limited Stay Permit for Investors) | Ownership status does not authorise unrelated operational work |
| Join qualifying family | Family / Spouse KITAS | Family stay and paid-work permission are separate questions |
| Study in Indonesia | Student KITAS (Limited Stay Permit for Study) | The institution sponsors the study activity; work is not implied |
| Long-stay or retirement planning | Second Home Visa | Check asset, activity and dependant conditions before committing funds |
| Later permanent stay | KITAP (Permanent Stay Permit) | KITAP follows a qualifying basis and application, not residence alone |
Inspect the issued record immediately after entry
Save the eVisa, entry record, passport page and any electronically issued ITAS. Some products now issue or convert the limited-stay permission at entry, while the current service standard still gives a maximum 30-day post-entry application period where a first ITAS application is required. The correct action is to inspect the actual grant and sponsor portal, not automatically file or wait.
Ask the sponsor to show the approved employer, job, address and validity. Immigration publishes separate services for address change, sponsor change, position change and transferring a permit to a new passport. A later change must be filed through the correct service; editing a payroll or lease record does not update immigration.
Coordinate immigration and local population records
Choose initial housing that the sponsor and landlord can document. The immigration address-change checklist calls for sponsor correspondence, passport and current stay-permit records, eVisa, a local domicile statement and family evidence where relevant. Ask the local immigration office and civil-registration service which records apply to the issued status before changing address.
For the lease, verify ownership or authority, inventory, maintenance, utilities, internet, flood exposure, deposit, early termination and whether the property permits the intended registration. Indonesia’s island and city differences are material; begin with flexible accommodation until commute and infrastructure have been tested.
Start tax and payroll from the facts, not the visa label
Indonesia can treat a foreign citizen as a domestic tax subject when residing there, spending more than 183 days within twelve months, or being present with an intention to reside. A person can owe Indonesian tax on Indonesian work before crossing a residence day threshold. Track arrival and departure days, contract location, benefits, equity and payments from abroad from day one.
Ask the employer or adviser when NPWP registration and annual filing begin and whether treaty relief or any special foreign-skill rule is relevant. Preserve the contract, monthly payslips, withholding records and evidence for overseas income or remittances. Immigration sponsorship, tax residence and payroll withholding are related but not interchangeable.
Build banking and household services from consistent records
Banks apply their own customer checks. Take passport, issued stay permit, Indonesian address, tax record and employer or sponsor evidence requested by the chosen institution, and keep an overseas payment fallback until the account, card and mobile access are proven. Use the same spelling and document number across immigration, tax, payroll and banking.
Before paying a long deposit, confirm rent currency, payment recipient, utility liabilities, repairs and inventory. For remote or island locations, test internet redundancy, water, power and access to healthcare. Do not send an investment or housing payment to create a visa narrative unless the current immigration product and regulated receiving channel have been independently confirmed.
Give each family member a status and plan driving locally
Carry marriage and birth certificates in the form the sponsor requests, and confirm dependant validity against the principal permit. Immigration’s service information requires the birth of a foreign stay-permit holder’s child to be reported within 60 days. Schools may need passport, stay status, prior reports and vaccination records, so shortlist them before committing to a district.
Resolve your driving authority before using a car or motorcycle. For an Indonesian SIM application, police rules list different immigration evidence for permanent residents, temporary foreign experts and students. Ask the traffic-police service whether your existing foreign documents are recognised for your stay and vehicle class or whether a local licence and tests are required; do not rely only on a rental company’s assurance.
Plan animal quarantine and inter-island moves separately
For an animal arriving from abroad, Indonesia’s Quarantine Authority requires origin health evidence, vaccination records and rabies-antibody evidence where applicable, registration through its SSMQC channel, and presentation to quarantine at an official entry point. Confirm disease restrictions and the precise origin-and-species file before booking.
Moving the pet onward between Indonesian islands is another regulated movement: current guidance directs owners to PTK Online, veterinary certification and quarantine reporting at departure and destination. Separately calendar passport, ITAS or ITAP, sponsor, manpower and family validity. If employment or sponsorship ends, the sponsor should initiate the relevant termination or exit-permit process before expiry.
