Netherlands moving checklist

Use this after choosing the correct Dutch residence purpose. Sponsor-led filing is common, but the applicant still owns document accuracy, MVV or biometrics attendance, travel validity, municipal registration and continuing compliance.

Content updated 11 September 2026. Individual source-check dates are listed below.

Gate 1: route and sponsor

Identify the route and who can file it. Only a recognised employer files the highly skilled migrant route, and only a recognised higher-education institution files the student route. GVVA and ordinary partner procedures allocate tasks differently.

Check MVV requirements separately. The MVV is an entry visa for a stay over 90 days and is normally requested with the residence permit. Visa-free short travel does not by itself prove an MVV exemption.

Gate 2: complete evidence

Give the sponsor every requested document before it files. Official foreign records may need legalisation and translation into Dutch, English, French or German. Keep names and dates consistent and retain a copy of the filed pack.

For work, align contract, salary and employer evidence. For study, use the institution’s current finance deadline and remember tuition is separate from the IND study norm. For partner residence, resolve relationship, income, civic-integration and MVV questions independently.

Decision, MVV and biometrics

Keep the IND receipt and read any request for documents immediately. The decision period pauses when additional evidence is requested and IND gives a revised date. A legal decision period is not an arrival forecast.

After approval, attend the Dutch representation named in the application if an MVV is required. If no MVV was used and biometrics remain outstanding, follow the IND letter before booking.

BRP registration and BSN

For a stay over four months, Government.nl says to register with the municipality within five days of arrival. The municipality records you in the BRP and issues the BSN. Book early because municipalities control their own appointment and document process.

IND tells new residents to bring a legalised and translated birth certificate and ask the municipality what else is required. Address evidence, marriage records and the positive decision or residence card may also be requested depending on the municipality and household.

Card, insurance and TB actions

Collect the residence document only after IND sends the collection letter. Inspect the name, validity and work wording. A GVVA holder must also understand the additional work document.

People who come to live or work generally need Dutch basic insurance with coverage from the day the obligation starts and must arrange it no later than four months after arrival. Study-only cases can differ. Complete the TB test within the IND period only if your application included the undertaking and no exemption applies.

Final failure check

Pause if the employer is not recognised for a highly skilled migrant filing, the school is not the filing sponsor, a visitor exemption is being used as an MVV answer, biometrics were booked without an IND instruction, the municipality appointment is being delayed until card collection, or work is planned without checking the endorsement.

Keep the sponsor informed of address, employment, enrolment or relationship changes. Sponsor and applicant reporting duties can continue after the card is issued.
