Your first 90 days in the Netherlands

For residents staying over four months, the municipality registration target is within five days of arrival. Do not wait for every other task before booking. Follow the IND letter for biometrics and card collection, then verify the card and keep sponsor, study or work conditions under review.

Arrival day to day 5

Check passport, MVV validity where used and the positive decision. Tell the employer, institution or partner sponsor you have arrived. Keep the residence-document and biometrics instructions accessible.

Register with the municipality within five days if the stay will exceed four months. NetherlandsWorldwide advises booking before departure because appointment waits can be long. If the earliest appointment is later, keep the booking and ask the municipality whether it can register you from the booking date.

BRP and BSN

Bring the municipality’s required identity and occupancy evidence. IND advises bringing a legalised and translated birth certificate. Family composition can trigger requests for marriage, divorce or child records.

After registration, verify the BRP details and receive the BSN. The BSN is an administrative number used for government and healthcare dealings; it is not the residence permit and does not itself prove work rights.

Biometrics and residence document

If biometrics remain outstanding, follow the IND letter. The IND says an appointment made before the relevant receipt or request can be cancelled. Where fingerprints were taken abroad but are unusable, IND can request them again.

Collect the residence document only after the invitation, then check spelling, date of birth, validity and work endorsement. A GVVA worker must also read the additional document that identifies the employer and conditions.

Insurance and TB

If you came to live or work and the Dutch insurance duty applies, arrange a Dutch policy as quickly as possible and within four months, with coverage from the day the duty began. Waiting until month four does not postpone the start date.

Study-only cases can be different: IND says foreign insurance covering the Netherlands may suffice for a study permit holder, while taking employment can change the answer. Complete the GGD TB test within the period stated by IND only if the application included the undertaking and no exemption applies.

Days 15 to 90

Once registered, request DigiD if needed to use Dutch digital government services and monitor My IND or MijnOverheid where applicable. Keep the decision, card, BRP evidence, policy records and sponsor correspondence together.

Workers should verify permission before starting or changing an employer. Students should confirm enrolment and the annual progress standard. Partners should register at the same address where the ordinary partner route requires cohabitation.

When the sequence breaks

If the card is not ready, do not assume that BRP registration must wait; ask the municipality what lawful-stay evidence it accepts. If biometrics are missing, use the IND instruction rather than booking repeatedly. If the decision or card wording conflicts with the intended job or family status, contact the sponsor and IND before relying on it.

Report material address, employment, enrolment or relationship changes through the route’s required channel. A sponsor may have reporting duties, but that does not remove the foreign national’s own obligation to provide information.
