Moving to Seychelles: a practical relocation guide

Anyone taking gainful occupation in Seychelles needs a Gainful Occupation Permit; a Visitor’s Permit, Residence Permit, Student Permit or Dependant’s Permit is not a substitute for that work authorisation.

Choose the legal route before the travel route

The Immigration authority says a non-Seychellois who will be gainfully occupied needs a GOP. The prospective employer normally submits before the employee enters for that work; a Visitor’s Permit must not be used to begin the job.

A Residence Permit is for a person not prohibited from immigrating who has qualifying family or contribution grounds and is not to be gainfully occupied. Students and dependants have separate permits, and a dependant needs a GOP before taking employment.

Secure the GOP before the relocation flight

Agree who files the GOP, which labour approval precedes it, and how qualifications, contract, medical evidence and accommodation will be supplied. Do not travel for work until the official approval and entry instructions are clear.

On arrival, collect or endorse the permit as directed and check employer, occupation and validity. Preserve the decision and receipt because island travel or a passport change can complicate replacement.

Choose an island and home as one decision

Mahé, Praslin and La Digue differ in job access, ferries, schools, healthcare and supply chains. Inspect the property, verify landlord authority and clarify utilities, internet, inventory, transport and termination before paying.

Keep an actual-address record for immigration, employer and banking. A cheap lease on another island may be impractical once ferry schedules and school or work travel are included.

Register payroll and tax without relying on permit labels

Ask the bank for its current GOP or residence document, address, employer and source-of-funds requirements. Keep a usable payment method until the local account is fully operational.

Track days, salary, benefits, overseas income and any self-employment receipts. Confirm individual and business obligations with the Seychelles Revenue Commission; a Visitor’s, Residence or GOP label does not answer every tax question.

Plan health, schools, driving and pets for island capacity

Confirm insurer network, referral and overseas evacuation cover. Families should secure a school place and transport before choosing the island; carry vaccination, medical and prior-school records.

Verify driving-licence recognition and insurer rules locally. Pet transport needs advance veterinary and airline coordination and should be checked before accommodation is made non-refundable.

Renew before employment or family status changes

A GOP is tied to the approved gainful occupation. Obtain a fresh or varied approval before changing employer or starting self-employment, and renew dependants separately.

Check sea and weather disruptions as well as current travel advice before inter-island plans. On exit, collect tax and employment records and close permits, lease and utilities deliberately.
