Moving to Spain: practical relocation guide
Spain relocation works best as a dependency chain: lawful status, usable address, local registration, healthcare basis, tax and work compliance, then household systems.

Choose permission before planning the move
Separate permission to visit from permission to live or work. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens use free-movement registration; most other nationals need a national visa or eligible residence route for a stay beyond 90 days. A property purchase, NIE or lease is not immigration permission.
Match the route to the activity you will really perform. Remote work, non-working residence, Spanish employment, entrepreneurship, study and family each have different evidence and work rights. Confirm the post-entry card step, family process and renewal conditions before paying for a long lease.
- Save the visa, grant, entry evidence and full application file.
- Put entry, card, expiry and renewal dates in one calendar.
- Use VisaAtlas triage if the route is uncertain.
Build a housing and cash plan that survives administration
Keep accessible money for temporary lodging, deposits and the period before banking is operational, without assuming a universal budget. Inspect the home, verify the owner or agent, read break and renewal terms, inventory damage and record meters before transferring funds.
A genuine address supports municipal padrón registration, residence-card appointments, healthcare, school placement and correspondence. Ask whether the owner will provide the papers required by the ayuntamiento. Spain’s consumer ministry states that the statutory cash deposit for an ordinary housing tenancy is one month of rent, although other lawful guarantees may be addressed separately.
Complete local registration and establish healthcare cover
Follow the padrón process published by the municipality where you actually live; evidence and appointments are local. If your authorisation requires a Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero, request it promptly within the route-specific deadline. An NIE is an identifier, while a TIE is the physical evidence of status.
Do not infer public healthcare entitlement from a visa, NIE or padrón. Workers, beneficiaries, S1 holders and others obtain coverage through different legal bases. Keep required private cover until the competent body confirms replacement coverage, then follow the regional health service’s card and health-centre process.
Treat tax and work as a pre-arrival workstream
Spanish tax residence is broader than a day counter. The Tax Agency describes a more-than-183-day test, an economic-interests test and a rebuttable family presumption; sporadic absences can count. Immigration residence and tax residence answer different questions.
Have foreign employment, remote work or self-employment reviewed for Spanish payroll, Social Security, invoicing and permanent-establishment consequences. Foreign payment does not automatically keep work outside Spain. If considering the special inbound-worker regime, check eligibility and its filing window rather than budgeting on an assumed rate.
Connect banking, utilities and communications
Prepare passport, NIE or TIE as applicable, address and tax-residence declarations, plus income and source-of-funds evidence. Compare fees, cards and transfer access. A legally resident EU consumer can ask about a basic payment account, but identity and anti-money-laundering checks still apply.
Identify who holds each electricity, water, gas and internet contract. Photograph meters, retain supply identifiers, check minimum terms and avoid inheriting undocumented debt. Keep an overseas account and mobile-data fallback until salary, rent, direct debits and fixed internet all work.
Sequence driving, children and pets
Licence validity depends on issuing country and the start of normal residence. Some non-EU licences can be exchanged and others cannot. DGT says agreement-country licences generally must pre-date Spanish residence and a non-EU foreign licence is normally valid for no more than six months after normal residence begins.
Contact the autonomous-community education authority for school placement and language support; address affects the process. For dogs, cats and ferrets, check origin-specific rules for microchip, rabies vaccination, the correct passport or animal health certificate, any antibody test and a designated entry point. Airline and landlord rules are additional.
Put the move in dependency order
Confirm status and work rights; assemble authenticated identity, civil-status, health and income records; choose temporary housing; verify the long-term address; complete only the registrations that apply; then move banking and bills. Keep a day-count and document log for tax, renewal and travel.
Continue with the country checklist for pre-departure dependencies and the first-90-days guide for arrival sequencing.
