Healthcare in Spain for new residents
A visa, NIE and padrón do not by themselves answer who pays for healthcare. Establish the legal basis first, then complete the regional health-card process.

Identify the coverage basis
Workers and self-employed people, eligible beneficiaries, holders of registered coordination documents and people covered through other statutory routes do not enter the system in the same way. Some immigration routes require private insurance at application and arrival.
Ask the competent body to confirm entitlement. Do not cancel private cover because an appointment was booked or a number was issued. Emergency treatment and routine funded access are different questions.
Connect national entitlement to regional care
After entitlement is recognised, follow the autonomous community’s process for the individual health card and assigned centre. Bring identity, address registration and the entitlement document requested locally.
Check names and address across records, then learn the route for primary care, urgent care, prescriptions and specialist referrals. Availability of an assigned family doctor can vary locally.
Protect clinical continuity
Bring a concise clinical summary, vaccination record, recent results, prescription copies and generic medicine names. Carry enough lawful medication for the transition and check any controlled-drug travel rules before departure.
For urgent danger call 112. Keep emergency contacts, allergies and current medicines accessible outside a locked phone.
Sources and checks
The linked authorities set the rules. VisaAtlas explains how the steps fit together; planning suggestions are not a decision on your immigration status, tax residence or entitlement to services.
