Choose the legal route before the travel route
Uganda’s Entry Permit page lists work and business classes for employees, investors, professionals, missionaries and others. Match the proposed activity and sponsoring organisation to the correct class before travel; a tourist or East African Tourist Visa is not a work permit.
A Special Pass is a limited temporary device, not a default bridge for an indefinite job. Student, dependant and long-term residence statuses have separate purposes and should not be read as open work permission.
| Plan | VisaAtlas route | Boundary to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Entry Permit or work permit | Entry Permit / Work Permit | Choose the class matching employment, profession or business. |
| Special Pass | Special Pass | A short temporary authorisation, not a substitute for long-term approval. |
| Dependant Pass | Dependant Pass | Residence as a dependant does not create open work rights. |
| Certificate of Residence | Certificate of Residence | Long-term eligibility has its own statutory test. |
Complete the online file and verify the class
Prepare the contract or business evidence, sponsor documents, qualifications, police clearance and passport in the format the immigration portal requests. Regulated work may need professional registration in addition to immigration approval.
After approval and any biometrics or endorsement, inspect class, organisation, activity and validity. Keep the application and payment references and ensure each dependant’s record is linked correctly.
Choose Kampala or a regional base around the assignment
Kampala commute, school transport and utility resilience should be tested before a long lease. For regional or field work, confirm road, communications, medical evacuation and employer security arrangements.
Verify landlord authority, lease, deposit, inventory, water, power, internet and actual address. Keep the payment trail for immigration, bank and tax records.
Obtain banking and URA clarity early
Ask the bank for the permit, address, employer, tax-number and source-of-funds documents it currently accepts. Investors and consultants should keep personal and business flows separate.
Track days, salary, allowances, foreign income and invoices and establish the URA registration and filing position. An overseas payroll arrangement does not itself remove Ugandan immigration or tax questions.
File family, education and health steps separately
Use the Dependant Pass for eligible family members and the Student Pass for the course where applicable. An adult dependant should obtain the appropriate Entry Permit before employment.
Carry birth, marriage, custody, vaccination and prior-school records. Confirm insurer network, emergency transport and medicine access for the exact posting, particularly outside Kampala.
Renew by class and check border travel
A change of employer, profession or business can change the Entry Permit class. Obtain approval before starting the new activity and calendar principal and dependant expiries separately.
Official travel advice distinguishes border and national-park areas. Check the intended route immediately before travel, then obtain tax, employment and permit records before final departure.
