Moving to Zambia: permission, arrival and practical setup

Zambia publishes Employment, Temporary Employment, Investor, Spouse, Study and Residence permits. A visitor eVisa, KAZA Univisa or business visit visa is for entry and visits, not a substitute for the relevant work or residence permit.

Separate entry, residence and work permission

Zambia publishes Employment, Temporary Employment, Investor, Spouse, Study and Residence permits. A visitor eVisa, KAZA Univisa or business visit visa is for entry and visits, not a substitute for the relevant work or residence permit.

A visa waiver, visitor visa or business-visitor permission is not an open right to take employment or provide local services. Remote work also needs an immigration, labour and tax analysis unless the authority publishes a route that expressly covers it.

Complete the arrival record

Keep the approval letter, passport endorsement and any local registration together, and verify whether collection or biometrics must occur at Immigration. A temporary employment assignment should use its own permit rather than a visitor extension.

Inspect names, passport number, sponsor or purpose, permitted activity and expiry on every issued record. Keep the approval, receipt and a copy of the entry stamp outside the passport.

Make housing support the move

Lusaka, Copperbelt and remote project sites require different commute, power, water and medical plans. Employer housing should state what happens when the assignment ends.

Verify landlord authority, lease language, deposit, inventory, utilities, internet and early-exit terms. Keep the real address and payment trail for immigration, banking and employer files.

Set up banking, payroll and tax evidence

Confirm payroll, local tax registration and the bank’s permit requirements before the first salary. Investors should preserve capital, company and personal-account evidence separately.

Ask the bank and tax authority for their live identity, permit, address, tax-number and source-of-funds requirements. Immigration status alone does not determine tax residence: retain travel days, payslips, foreign income and business invoices.

Plan each family member and essential service

Spouse and Study Permits are separate records; do not assume a spouse permit carries unrestricted work authority. Check school transport, malaria prevention advice and emergency care for the exact location.

A dependant, student or family residence document should not be treated as an adult work permit without confirmation. Carry legalised civil records, prescriptions, vaccination records and prior-school reports.

Control renewal, changes and current risk

Start permit renewal while the contract, company or relationship evidence is current and obtain approval before changing employer. Check current advice before border, KAZA or remote road travel.

Read current official travel advice for Zambia, the exact region and any overland route before travel. Confirm that insurance covers the location and planned work.
