Kingdom of Sweden settlement & citizenship

Sweden lets work-permit holders apply for permanent residence when extending after enough qualifying work. From June 2026, Swedish citizenship rules are stricter, with an 8-year main residence rule and language/society requirements.

    No limited validity while resident in Sweden

    Who qualifies
    Work-permit holders who have had and met permit conditions for work and worked in Sweden for 4 of the past 7 years.

    Financial maintenance, good conduct, and qualifying work history at extension.

    Swedish citizenship

    Main rule: 8 years habitual residence

    Who qualifies
    Permanent residents and other eligible residents meeting identity, residence, Swedish language/society, maintenance, and conduct rules.
    Key gate
    Main rule from 6 June 2026 is 8 years continuous residence for most non-Nordic adults.

Physical presence

Citizenship main rule is 8 years continuous habitual residence; absences over 6 weeks in a year are subtracted from the residence calculation.

Language level

Citizenship knowledge requirements use CEFR B1 for reading/listening and A2 for speaking/writing, unless an exemption applies.

Test / oath

Swedish society knowledge can be shown through approved education; the society test is expected from August 2026 and language test from autumn 2027 at the earliest.

Dual citizenship

Sweden allows dual and multiple citizenship.
