Overview

Non-EU students accepted onto a recognised Portuguese higher-education or research programme lasting more than one year apply for a student residence visa (often called the "visto de residência para estudo"). Shorter courses use the Schengen short-stay study visa. On arrival, students register with AIMA to receive a residence permit that is renewed annually for the duration of the course. Graduates can apply for a 1-year job-search residence permit to transition into Portuguese employment or an entrepreneurship route, and study time counts partially toward long-term residence eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

Can students work in Portugal?+−

Yes. Part-time work is generally permitted alongside full-time study, with no separate work authorisation required. Employers typically treat the student residence permit as sufficient permission to work.

How long does it take to get the Portuguese student residence visa?+−

Consulates usually take 2–3 months from application to decision, though backlogs at high-volume consulates (Brazil, India) have pushed this closer to 4 months. Apply well in advance of your course start date; consulates generally accept applications up to 3 months before intended travel.

Can I stay in Portugal after my studies?+−

Yes. Recent graduates of a Portuguese higher-education programme can apply for a 1-year job-search residence permit to transition to work. Portuguese work contracts then route via the D3 (highly qualified), D1 (general work), or the EU Blue Card. Study time counts partially toward the 5-year qualifying residence period for permanent residence.

Why are Portuguese student visa applications commonly rejected?+−

The two most common rejection grounds are an institution that is not recognised by DGES or not on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' qualifying list, and insufficient evidence of funds. Make sure your course is at a DGES-recognised institution and that your bank statements clearly cover the required subsistence amount.

Do I need health insurance to get a Portuguese student visa?+−

Yes. Comprehensive health insurance valid in Portugal is among the standard requirements for the student residence visa, alongside your acceptance letter, proof of funds, accommodation, and a clean criminal-record check.

Does the Portuguese student visa itself lead to permanent residence or citizenship?+−

Not on its own — the student route does not directly lead to settlement, but study time counts partially toward the 5-year qualifying residence period. Graduates transition via a 1-year job-search residence permit into a settlement route such as the D3, D1, or the EU Blue Card.
