Republic of Croatia vs Iceland: where should you move?

Start with the route that fits your plans, then compare the practical steps after approval. A country offering more routes is not necessarily easier for you to move to.

What setup starts after the immigration decision

Four sourced actions from each relocation checklist show the sequence beyond visa approval. The linked country guides contain the complete registration, health, tax, banking, housing and renewal context.

Republic of Croatia

A workable Croatian relocation connects the right stay-and-work basis to a registrable address, OIB and health-insurance basis. Third-country nationals face a short address-reporting window, while EU free-movement and cross-border insurance cases follow different branches.

  1. Before travel

Match local work, highly skilled work, remote work or family status to the correct route.

  2. On arrival

Register the temporary residence address within the current 15-day window.

The 2026 amendment replaced the former three-day period in Article 178.

  3. First month

Complete or verify HZZO registration within eight days of the qualifying circumstance.

  4. Later

Report any temporary-address change within 15 days.

Iceland

Iceland has different routes for Nordic citizens, other EEA or EFTA citizens, and people from outside that area. A kennitala is an identifier, not permission to live or work, and healthcare does not necessarily begin on the day an address is registered.

  1. Before travel

Confirm the Nordic, EEA or EFTA, or third-country route for each family member.

  2. On arrival

Complete the kennitala process for the applicable nationality group.

  3. First month

Open a bank account and activate electronic identification.

  4. Later

Calendar the issuing-country driving-licence exchange or test action.
