Overview
This is Iceland's standard route for non-EEA/EFTA professionals with expert knowledge and a genuine Icelandic job offer. Two authorities are involved: the Directorate of Immigration (Utlendingastofnun) decides your residence permit, while the Directorate of Labour (Vinnumalastofnun) decides the work permit that goes with it - your employer drives the work-permit side. Good to know: Iceland is in the EEA and Schengen but is not an EU member, so there is no EU Blue Card here; this national permit is the equivalent route. Qualified-professional cases can use an expedited track that is processed faster than a standard application.

Frequently asked questions
Why are two government offices involved?+
Iceland splits the decision: the Directorate of Immigration decides your residence permit and the Directorate of Labour decides the linked work permit, so both must say yes. Confirm the current process on the official page.
Is there an EU Blue Card in Iceland?+
No - Iceland is in the EEA and Schengen but is not an EU member, so the EU Blue Card does not apply here. This national qualified-professional permit is the equivalent route. Confirm the current rules on the official page.
