Overview
This work permit is for temporary employees hired because of a shortage of staff that the Icelandic labour market cannot fill. The Directorate of Labour decides it, and the employer must first show they searched for someone already free to work in Iceland - including EEA nationals - before turning abroad. Good to know: it is meant for genuine, short-term fluctuations in the labour market, so it is granted only in limited circumstances and is not designed as a settlement route on its own. You would normally move to a longer-term work permit if you want to stay and build toward residence.
