Moving to Bolivia: permission and practical setup
Bolivia distinguishes short work permanence, longer temporary residence and permanent status. The migration purpose must match the real paid activity, and high-altitude cities add a practical health and housing decision before arrival.

Choose transitory or temporary permanence deliberately
The migration framework includes an object-purpose short work stay and longer temporary work residence, as well as family, study and permanent categories. Paid activity must be covered even without a conventional employment relationship. Do not use business mobility or visitor admission as residence.
| Plan | Route | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Defined short paid assignment | Short-Term Work Stay (Permanencia Transitoria) | Transitory work purpose |
| Longer work move | Temporary Work Residence (Permanencia Temporal) | Temporary work permanence |
| Family basis | Temporary Family Residence (Permanencia Temporal) | Relationship and status evidence |
| Permanent status | Permanent Residence (Permanencia Definitiva) | Separate eligibility |
Use the current migration procedure for the chosen purpose
Prepare passport, purpose, police, medical, solvency, employer or family records required by the legal framework and live procedure. Confirm apostille or legalisation and Spanish translation before travel, and keep originals and payment receipts.
Complete Migration records and choose the city carefully
Follow the foreigner-procedure and office instructions for the granted category and keep address and identity details consistent. In La Paz or El Alto, plan altitude adjustment and access to care; elsewhere assess climate, flood or transport exposure, utilities and lease terms.
Connect tax, pension and health systems to the contract
Ask the employer and tax authority what registration and withholding follow the actual work. Confirm pension and health enrolment rather than assuming the migration card activates benefits. Keep another payment route while a bank verifies identity, address and source of funds.
Protect health and school continuity
Arrange travel or private cover until the household’s public or employment-based health position is confirmed, especially for altitude-sensitive conditions. Ask Education and the intended school about placement, residence evidence, vaccinations and prior records; confirm dependants individually.
Check licence, Customs and veterinary requirements
Ask the transport authority how long a foreign licence can be used and whether a Bolivian licence is required. Obtain Customs treatment before shipping household goods or a vehicle and animal-health authorisation before booking a pet.
