Australia or New Zealand for relocation?
Compare route eligibility and work rights first; compare housing, health, tax, driving and family logistics only after the legal pathway is realistic.

A concrete skilled-migration comparison
Australia’s SkillSelect routes and New Zealand’s Skilled Migrant Category are not two versions of the same points test. Home Affairs requires an expression of interest for the Australian 189, 190 and 491 routes; meeting the points threshold does not guarantee an invitation. An invitation is still not a visa grant.
New Zealand’s SMC currently requires a qualifying job or offer from an accredited employer and eligibility under one of three pathways: points-based, Skilled Work Experience, or Trades and Technicians. The six-point test belongs to the points-based pathway, not every SMC applicant. Compare the pathway that fits your actual evidence, rather than assuming the country with the smaller points number is easier.
| Your evidence | Australia: question to resolve | New Zealand: question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Strong qualifications and English | Which skilled occupation, assessment, points and invitation route fit? | Does your qualification support the selected SMC pathway, and is the job eligible? |
| Substantial practical work experience | How does the experience count for the relevant occupation and visa? | Does the Skilled Work Experience or Trades and Technicians pathway fit the required local and total experience? |
| A partner with a stronger profile | Should the partner be the primary skilled applicant? | Which person meets a qualifying pathway and job requirement? |
| A fixed moving date | What happens to the plan if no invitation arrives? | What happens if the required job or local experience is not secured in time? |
Compare the route, not the country headline
Australia and New Zealand each offer skilled, employer, student, family and temporary routes, but the eligibility tests and conditions are not interchangeable. Start with the occupation, job or course, age, family plan and intended duration, then compare the specific route pages.
A visitor, student or temporary work status may not provide the same work, family or settlement outcome as residence. Treat permanent residence and citizenship as later legal milestones, not automatic results of moving.
Work and money
Compare the actual employer, occupation, pay, registration and location conditions. Budget temporary housing, bond, transport, utilities, food, insurance and the first pay cycle in the city where the job is located.
Australia uses the ATO and New Zealand uses Inland Revenue; tax residence is separate from the immigration document in both systems. Keep records of overseas income and ask for advice when a treaty or remote-work arrangement is involved.
Health and family
Medicare eligibility in Australia and publicly funded health eligibility in New Zealand depend on status and category. Check the relevant authority before treating public healthcare as available on arrival.
Compare each family member’s visa or permit, school and childcare route, health cover and travel-document requirement. Do not infer family rights from the main applicant’s approval alone.
Daily-life decision points
Driving rules are local: Australia uses state and territory authorities, while New Zealand uses its national transport authority with licence-specific rules. Housing, schools, pets and utilities also require local checks.
Choose the destination where the legal route, job or course, family administration and first-year budget fit together. If neither route is yet evidenced, use the VisaAtlas triage tool before booking travel.
Compare two real offers with the same household worksheet
Put the offers into a common currency for comparison, but keep the original AUD and NZD figures alongside them. Compare take-home income with the rent and transport needed for each actual workplace. Add the cost of health cover, childcare, professional registration and the gap before your first salary. A higher gross salary is not automatically a better household outcome.
Run a second version in which only one adult earns initially. If the move depends on a partner working, the relevant dependant work conditions are a decision gate, not a footnote. Use the moving budget tool with your own quotes and keep deposits distinct from spending.
Sources and checks
The linked authorities set the rules. VisaAtlas explains how the steps fit together; planning suggestions are not a decision on your immigration status, tax residence or entitlement to services.
