Moving to Egypt: a practical relocation guide
Egyptian residence and permission to work are separate approvals. A local employee needs the employer-led labour authorisation and the corresponding Ministry of Interior residence record; property, deposit, study and family residence do not automatically permit work.

Choose the legal route before the travel route
For a job in Egypt, make the employer identify the labour-permit process and the residence application it supports. A tourist entry, property purchase, bank deposit or family card is not by itself authorisation to perform the job.
Property, deposit, student and family residence are renewable purpose-based categories. Treat them as residence bases with separate conditions, not as automatic permanent residence or a general freelance programme.
| Plan | VisaAtlas route | Boundary to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Work-based residence | Work-based Residence Permit (Egypt) | Confirm both labour and residence approvals before starting. |
| Property residence | Residence Permit via Real Estate (Egypt) | Ownership residence is not a general work permit. |
| Bank-deposit residence | Residence Permit via Bank Deposit (Egypt) | Maintain the qualifying deposit and check activity restrictions. |
| Student residence | Student Residence Permit (Egypt) | Admission and residence do not create unrestricted employment. |
Coordinate labour approval and residence
Put the Arabic and English employer names, job title, workplace and contract term into the pre-arrival file. Qualifications, police records, medical evidence and employer corporate papers may need translation or legalisation; confirm the exact list before shipment.
After arrival, complete the employer-led labour step and Ministry of Interior residence card sequence. Inspect name, nationality, sponsor or purpose and expiry, and keep receipts because the two approvals can renew on different timelines.
Choose housing around Cairo’s administration and commute
A Cairo address may determine the practical immigration office, school run and daily travel time. Verify landlord authority, Arabic lease terms, deposit, utilities, building fees and inventory before payment; retain evidence of the actual address.
Outside Cairo, confirm access to the office that will handle residence renewals and professional licensing. Do not rely on a hotel booking as the long-term address if the authority or bank requests a registered lease.
Reconcile payroll, banking and two tax systems
Ask the bank whether it needs the residence card, Egyptian address, employment evidence, local mobile number and tax information. Keep an operational foreign card until salary and transfers have been tested.
Record travel days and all Egyptian and foreign income. The Egyptian Tax Authority, not the visa label, governs residence, payroll withholding and filing; obtain advice if working partly abroad, retaining a foreign employer or receiving investment income.
Build family, health and school files separately
Authenticated marriage and birth records support family residence, but an accompanying spouse should not accept work until the separate labour and residence basis is approved. Confirm insurance and provider access for each person rather than assuming residence produces comprehensive cover.
Schools can require prior reports, birth records and vaccination evidence. Check curriculum, transport and payment terms before signing the lease, and carry sufficient prescribed medicine while locating a provider.
Renew early and screen every domestic route
Calendar labour permission, residence card, passport and dependant documents separately. A change of employer or activity should be cleared through both responsible authorities before the new work starts.
Official travel advice applies different restrictions to parts of Egypt and certain border or desert areas. Check the exact route before leisure or work travel, then preserve cancellation, payroll and tax evidence when leaving.
