Moving to Ghana: a practical relocation guide

Ghana links foreign employment to a work and residence permit, with company, GIPC or other quota evidence as applicable. Visitor permission, dependant residence and student residence do not themselves authorise employment.

Choose the legal route before the travel route

A foreign employee needs the Ghana Immigration Service work-and-residence process appropriate to the employer. Company cases, GIPC or Free Zones allocations, NGOs and professional cases have different support evidence; the organisation should name the route before arrival.

An immigrant quota allocates positions to an enterprise but is not the employee’s card. Visitor entry, student residence and dependant residence remain separate and should never be presented as permission to start paid or unpaid work.

Build the employer and professional evidence together

The Interior Ministry lists an appointment letter, company records, tax clearance, accounts, CV and qualifications among company work-permit evidence. Regulated professionals also need support or registration from the responsible Ghanaian body.

After approval, verify the passport endorsement or card, employer and expiry. Retain submission receipts, company quota evidence and biometrics records; ask who owns each renewal rather than assuming payroll will handle it.

Use a GhanaPost-addressed home you have inspected

Confirm the digital address, landlord identity, lease, inventory, utilities, water storage, power arrangements and service charges. Accra traffic and school transport can outweigh headline rent, while regional postings need a different healthcare and transport plan.

Keep the lease and payment trail for banking, immigration and tax evidence. If accommodation is employer-provided, record the move-out consequence of a job ending.

Complete banking and GRA onboarding deliberately

Ask the bank for its current passport, permit, digital-address, employer and tax identification requirements. Test salary receipt and international transfers before closing the transition account.

Ghanaian payroll withholding and individual filing depend on the tax rules, not simply the immigration category. Keep day counts, payslips, allowances and foreign-income records and confirm the position with GRA or a qualified adviser.

Give dependants their own residence and services plan

The GIS lists separate dependant and student permits. File marriage, birth, custody and school admission evidence for each person and obtain separate work permission before a dependant takes employment.

Confirm health insurance, routine provider, emergency transport and medicine availability for the precise area. Visit schools before fixing the lease and compare curriculum, transport, deposits and withdrawal terms.

Renew the permit and reassess regional travel

Renew the employer, quota and personal permit records in the correct sequence. A role, company or status change may require a fresh approval; do not continue on a card that records the former basis.

Review official travel advice before northern-border or regional journeys. On departure, settle tax, lease and employment records and obtain evidence for any permit cancellation or later application.
