Overview

The Dependant Residence Permit allows the spouse and dependent children of a foreign national lawfully resident in Ghana to live in the country alongside the principal permit holder. It is issued by the Ghana Immigration Service and is tied to the sponsor's status, renewed in line with it. It allows residence but does not by itself authorise the dependant to work - a dependant who wants to take up employment would need their own work and residence permit. It is renewable rather than permanent, so it does not by itself lead to settlement.

Frequently asked questions

Can a dependant work on this permit?+−

No. The Dependant Residence Permit allows residence based on the relationship but does not by itself authorise employment; a dependant who wants to work needs their own work and residence permit. Confirm the current rules on the official Ghana Immigration Service page.

What happens if the principal's permit ends?+−

The dependant permit is tied to the principal's status, so if the principal's permit ends the dependant generally loses the basis for theirs. Confirm the current rules on the official Ghana Immigration Service page.

Can my spouse and children join me in Ghana when I hold a work and residence permit?+−

Yes. The Dependant Residence Permit lets the spouse and dependent children of a foreign national who holds a Ghana work and residence permit or other qualifying status live in the country alongside the principal permit holder. Confirm the current requirements on the official Ghana Immigration Service page.

What documents prove my family relationship for a Ghana dependant permit?+−

The relationship is evidenced with a marriage certificate for a spouse or a birth certificate for a dependent child, alongside a copy of the principal's valid Ghana permit, the dependant's valid passport and recent photographs. Confirm the full document list on the official Ghana Immigration Service page.
