Moving to Jamaica: permission and practical setup

A work permit, extension of stay, permanent residence and unconditional landing answer different questions. Local employment usually needs Labour approval before work begins.

The Ministry of Labour administers work permits; PICA controls stay and residence. Remote-work marketing, property or a pending permanent-residence file is not authority for local work.

Prepare employer and civil records

Use the current Labour and PICA lists for passport, police, medical, job, finance and family evidence. Keep arrival and extension receipts and do not work while an application is merely pending.

Choose housing around transport and resilience

Test the commute, security, hurricane and flood exposure, water storage, power backup and internet. Verify the landlord, inventory and utilities and retain the signed lease and payments.

Connect TRN, NIS and banking

Confirm the Tax Registration Number and National Insurance Scheme steps that apply to the worker. Reconcile the first payroll record and keep an overseas payment method while the bank checks status, address and funds.

Confirm health, school and dependant status

Verify public, employer or private health access and evacuation cover for each person. Ask Education and the intended school about placement, vaccination and records; a partner needs a separate work answer.

Handle licences, Customs and pets

Confirm the resident licence process with Tax Administration Jamaica before driving. Obtain Customs treatment for goods or a vehicle and Veterinary Services approval before a pet travels.
