Banking in Spain for newcomers

Spanish bank onboarding is a compliance process, not an automatic arrival entitlement. Bring a coherent identity, address, tax and funds story and keep a fallback account.

Build the onboarding pack

Prepare passport, NIE or TIE as applicable, address evidence, tax-residence declarations, occupation and income records and evidence for the origin of substantial funds. Banks can request more material during the relationship, so retain the trail after opening.

Ask the branch what it accepts before attending. A bank’s commercial account policy can change, and having an NIE does not compel it to offer every product.

Compare the complete account

Compare maintenance conditions, cards, transfers, cash access, exchange rates, direct debits, branch availability and support language. Read the pre-contract fee document and decline bundled insurance or credit you do not need.

Legally resident EU consumers can ask for a basic payment account, subject to eligibility and anti-money-laundering checks. That right does not turn every current or savings account into a guaranteed product.

Move financial life in stages

Test incoming and outgoing transfers, then move rent, salary, tax and utilities one by one. Keep the origin-country account and authentication method until every recurring payment has completed successfully.

Update foreign-account reporting where your origin tax system requires it and never leave the bank with an obsolete tax address.
