Overview

Holy See and Vatican City State access does not operate like a normal destination visa system. Ordinary travel to Rome, Italy and the Schengen area must be checked separately with the competent Italian or Schengen authority; these entries cover only the Vatican City State access, residence and citizenship framework that is published by the Governorate. The residence chapter says people who have a right under the citizenship provision but do not request citizenship become residents for the period set by the issuing authority. It also lets the Cardinal President of the Governorate issue residence authorisations, without citizenship, to family members of Vatican citizens or residents, domestic collaborators of citizens or residents, and other cases considered appropriate.
