Overview

If your reason to live in Rwanda is not a standard job - for example you have an assured income, you are joining family, or you are here on another approved basis - the temporary resident permit is the general residence route. It covers a range of classes (such as the assured-income class for retirees and people with guaranteed income, and dependant classes for family), is issued by the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration, and is applied for online through IremboGov. It is renewable rather than permanent, so on its own it does not lead to settlement, though continued lawful residence can support a later permanent residence application. Good to know: which class you apply under depends on your specific basis, so check the matching class before you start.

ℹ️ Who can apply?

You do not need a job offer or employer to apply for the Temporary Resident Permit. This route does not lead to permanent residence. Open to qualifying applicants from all countries.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move to Rwanda on a guaranteed income or pension?+−

Yes. Rwanda has an assured-income class within its permits for people with retirement or guaranteed income, applied for online through IremboGov. We do not quote a fixed income figure - confirm the current requirements on the official Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration page.

Is the temporary resident permit permanent?+−

No. It is renewable while your basis continues, but it is not permanent. After enough lawful residence you may be able to apply for a permanent residence permit. Confirm the current rules on the official page.

Can my spouse and children join me in Rwanda on a residence permit?+−

Rwanda's temporary resident permit covers dependant classes for family, so family members joining a resident or Rwandan national can apply under the relevant class with relationship documents as supporting evidence. Confirm the specific dependant class and requirements on the official Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration page.
