Student Permit (Study and Research)

Overview

If you have been admitted to study or carry out research in Rwanda, this is the permit that keeps your stay in order. The study and research category is issued by the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration to foreign nationals enrolled at a recognised Rwandan institution or undertaking an approved research project, and the application is made online through IremboGov. It is tied to your enrolment or project and renewed alongside it, and it does not by itself lead to settlement; students who want to stay on usually move to a work or other residence basis afterwards. Good to know: the permit is for studying or researching, so any paid work follows the separate work rules.

   Confirm your admission or research approval and that the study and research permit matches your situation on the official page.

2. 02

   Build the evidence pack

   Gather the admission or approval letter, proof of funds and your travel document.

3. 03

   Submit through the official channel

   Apply online through the IremboGov portal, choosing the study and research permit.

4. 04

   After approval

   Renew the permit while you remain enrolled or your project continues, and plan another basis before finishing if you intend to stay.
