What is the Orientation year (Zoekjaar)?
Free 1-year permit to live and work in the Netherlands while you look for a job — open to recent graduates of Dutch universities or top-ranked global universities. No job offer needed to apply.
The Orientation Year (Zoekjaar hoogopgeleiden) is the Netherlands' graduate job-search visa. You get 12 months to live in the Netherlands, work for any employer without restriction, and find a qualifying role. It is open to three groups: graduates of accredited Dutch universities, graduates of a foreign university that appears on the Nuffic international top-200 ranking list (for the year you graduated), and certain post-doctoral researchers. You must apply within 3 years of finishing your degree. There is no job offer requirement — that is exactly the point. Once you find a qualifying employer during the year, you switch to the Highly Skilled Migrant (Kennismigrant) permit at a reduced salary threshold. Many people also use the Orientation Year as a bridge after finishing a Dutch master's degree, staying in the country while they interview rather than returning home and waiting for a work visa.
- Sponsorship: No job offer or employer sponsor is required.
- Settlement: This route does not lead to permanent residency.
- Typical permit length: 1 year, non-renewable as Zoekjaar.
- Indicative government fees: Approximately €220 (2026 figure; confirm on IND website).
How to read this estimate
The 2 weeks – 3 months window is the time IND — Orientation year typically associates with the Orientation year (Zoekjaar) — measured from a complete, correctly-lodged application through to a decision, not from when you start gathering documents.
- Collecting documents, getting qualifications recognised, and booking consular appointments all happen before the clock starts.
- If the authority requests more information, the clock pauses until you reply — so a fast, complete response keeps your place in the queue.
- Processing times shift with application volumes and policy changes. The IND — Orientation year page linked below is the only figure that is current on the day you apply.

How long does the Orientation year (Zoekjaar) take to process?+
The typical wait is 2 weeks – 3 months from submitting a complete application. IND legal decision period is 90 days; common 2–6 week outcomes for complete applications. These figures come from IND — Orientation year and were last verified on 2026-06-01. Always confirm on the primary source before you apply.
When does the 2 weeks – 3 months clock start?+
The clock starts when IND — Orientation year receives a complete, valid application — not when you begin collecting documents. Gathering evidence, getting qualifications recognised, and booking consular appointments all happen before the window starts.
Is there a way to speed up the decision?+
Some Netherlands routes offer a priority or premium service for an additional fee. Check the linked primary source for current options — availability changes and varies by consular post.
What makes an application take longer than expected?+
The most common reasons for delays beyond the published window are: missing or incorrect documents, a request for more information (which pauses the clock until you reply), background or medical checks, and consular appointment backlogs in your country. Submitting a complete, well-organised application on day one is the single biggest thing you can do to stay inside the published window.
When should I treat my Orientation year (Zoekjaar) application as delayed?+
Wait until you have passed the upper end of the published window (2 weeks – 3 months) before treating it as delayed. At that point, a single polite status enquiry through the official channel is reasonable. Do not chase repeatedly, as this tends to slow a case rather than speed it up.
