Overview
Foreign nationals of Armenian descent can obtain residence on the basis of their ethnic Armenian origin, evidenced to the Migration and Citizenship Service through documents such as baptism or birth records or other proof of descent. Historically this included a long-validity "special" residence status, but no new ten-year special residencies are issued after July 2026 under the reform; existing holders keep their rights until expiry. From August 2026 the main long-term status becomes a five-year permanent residence, and people of Armenian descent also have an expedited path to citizenship. Armenia generally permits dual citizenship. Armenia is not in the EU.
