Frequently asked questions

Is the Residence Pass-Talent tied to one employer?+−

No. Unlike the Employment Pass, the RP-T is not tied to a single employer, so holders can change jobs in Malaysia without applying for a new pass. It is a ten-year renewable pass aimed at retaining highly skilled talent.

How is the RP-T different from the Residence Pass?+−

The Residence Pass-Talent (RP-T) is a skilled-talent retention pass administered with TalentCorp, valid for ten years. The separate Residence Pass issued directly by the Immigration Department covers different categories such as family ties to Malaysian citizens or permanent residents and former Malaysians. Check the official pages to confirm which route applies to you.

Can I apply for the Residence Pass-Talent from abroad, or do I need to work in Malaysia first?+−

The RP-T typically expects a track record of working in Malaysia, usually on an Employment Pass, for a qualifying minimum period, plus a Malaysian income-tax history for the required period. Insufficient prior employment in Malaysia is a common blocker, so in practice it is a retention route for expatriates already established in the country rather than a first-entry route. Confirm the qualifying period on the official RP-T portal.
