Canada settlement & citizenship

Canada is one of the most predictable temp-to-citizenship ladders in the OECD. Express Entry and PNP nominees land as Permanent Residents from day one, and can apply for citizenship after 3 years (1,095 days) of physical presence.

Stages — from visa to passport

    Temporary resident (work / study permit)

    Permit-dependent, often 2-3 years

    Who qualifies
    LMIA-based work-permit holders, International Mobility Program holders, post-graduation work permit holders, study-permit holders.
    Key gate
    Maintain permit conditions; transition to a PR-eligible program.

    PR Card renewed every 5 years; status indefinite

    Who qualifies
    Express Entry invitees (FSW, CEC, FST), PNP nominees, family-class sponsorships, Atlantic Immigration Program, Agri-Food Pilot.

    Physical presence of 730 days in any 5-year window to retain PR card.

    Who qualifies
    PRs over 18 who have been physically present in Canada for 1,095 days (3 years) within the last 5 years and filed taxes for 3 of those 5 years.
    Key gate
    CELPIP or IELTS General proof of English (or TEF for French) at CLB 4+, citizenship test (20 questions, 15 correct), clean criminal and immigration record.
