Overview

The Friendly Nations (Naciones Amigas) route grants residence to nationals of countries designated as having friendly, professional and economic relations with Panama. Substantially reformed by Decreto Ejecutivo 197 of 2021, it no longer grants instant permanent residence: applicants first receive a two-year provisional (temporary) permit and can then apply for permanent residence. Economic or professional ties must be shown through a recognised route such as qualifying real estate, a fixed-term bank deposit, or employment with a Panamanian company. Panamanian law requires a licensed Panamanian lawyer to file the application with the Servicio Nacional de Migracion.

ℹ️ Who can apply?

Frequently asked questions

Does the Friendly Nations route still grant instant permanent residence?+−

No. Decreto Ejecutivo 197 of 2021 reformed the route: applicants now receive a two-year provisional permit first and can then apply for permanent residence. Older "instant permanent residence" guidance is out of date - confirm the current process on the official SNM page.

Do I need a lawyer for the Friendly Nations application?+−

Yes. Panamanian law requires that a licensed Panamanian lawyer file residency applications, including the Friendly Nations route. Confirm the current requirements on the official SNM page.

Can I move to Panama on the Friendly Nations route without a job offer?+−

Yes. The Friendly Nations route lets you show your economic or professional tie through qualifying real estate or a fixed-term bank deposit instead of employment with a Panamanian company, and it is not employer-sponsored. Confirm the accepted ties and current rules on the official SNM page.

What happens if my nationality is not on Panama's friendly-nations list?+−

Being a national of a country designated as a friendly nation is a core requirement of this route, and not being on that list is a common reason applications fail. If your nationality is not designated, you would need to consider a different residence category; confirm the current list on the official SNM page.
