Overview

Sweden's EU Blue Card requires a higher salary threshold than the standard work permit: at least 1.25× the average Swedish gross salary, currently SEK 52,000/month since 9 July 2025. Applicants need higher education corresponding to at least 180 higher-education credits, or at least 5 years of relevant professional experience, and a signed contract for highly qualified employment lasting at least 6 months. The main advantage over the standard work permit is intra-EU mobility: after 12 months with an EU Blue Card in another EU country, a holder can apply for a Swedish EU Blue Card within one month of entering Sweden. Blue Card holders can apply for Swedish permanent residence after 36 months with a Swedish EU Blue Card.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose the Blue Card or the standard work permit for Sweden?+−

Choose the Blue Card if you meet its higher salary and qualification rules and value EU Blue Card mobility or the 36-month Swedish permanent-residence track. Can experience qualify me for the Swedish EU Blue Card?+−

Yes. Sweden now allows at least 5 years of relevant professional experience as an alternative to higher education corresponding to at least 180 higher-education credits. You still need the salary threshold, signed highly qualified employment contract, and insurance requirements.

What qualifications and contract length does the Swedish EU Blue Card require?+−

When can an EU Blue Card holder in Sweden move to another EU country?+−

EU Blue Card mobility generally becomes available after 12 months in the first EU country that issued the card. A Swedish Blue Card holder who wants to move must follow the destination country's Blue Card procedure and timing rules.
