  • Digital Nomad Visa (Spain)

Residence permit for remote workers and international freelancers under the Startup Law (Ley de Startups).

American DNV applicants are a fast-growing cohort, drawn by the Beckham-equivalent special tax regime (Article 93 LIRPF) which flat-rates non-Spanish-source income at 24% up to €600k for the first six tax years. Two specific items make the US-DNV picture different from Portugal D8. Unlike Portugal, Spain has had a Social Security Totalisation Agreement with the US since 1988, which lets remote employees document continued US Social Security contributions via a Certificate of Coverage and avoids the dual-system trap on Spanish payroll equivalents. Second, Spanish retail banks have been less aggressive than Portuguese banks on FATCA-related US-person de-banking, but PFIC treatment of any EU-domiciled mutual funds and Form 8938 / FBAR continue to apply on the US worldwide-filing side regardless of the Beckham election. UGE-CE in-country processing (online via Mercurio) is materially faster than the consular route for Americans already on tourist status; budget the Beckham election separately with a Spanish asesor fiscal — the Article 93 application has its own 6-month window from arrival.
