Overview
A Marriage Exemption Certificate (MEC) is for a non-Jamaican who is married to a Jamaican national. It exempts you from needing a work permit, so you can take employment in Jamaica. The MEC itself is issued by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, and you then attend the immigration agency PICA to have your stay endorsed (an extension of stay) in your passport so you can live and work in Jamaica up to the certificate's expiry. This family route can be a stepping-stone toward longer-term residence and, in time, citizenship by marriage.
