Overview

Article 18 residency is the main way to live and work in Kuwait's private sector. A Kuwaiti employer acts as your sponsor, obtains a work permit, and the residence permit (commonly called the Iqama) is issued and renewed through the Ministry of Interior General Directorate of Residency Affairs. Your right to stay is tied to that employer - if the job ends, the residency basis ends - and Kuwait does not offer permanent residence or a settlement track to expatriates, so this is a fixed-term status you renew, not a path to citizenship. There is no separate digital-nomad visa in Kuwait. Treat any fee, salary or duration you read elsewhere as indicative and confirm it on the official Ministry of Interior page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get permanent residence in Kuwait through Article 18 work?+−

No. Kuwait does not offer permanent residence or a settlement track to expatriates. Article 18 residency is fixed-term and tied to your sponsoring employer, so you renew it while the job continues rather than building toward permanent status. Confirm the current rules on the official Ministry of Interior page.

What happens to my residency if I leave my job?+−

Because the residency is tied to your sponsoring employer, the basis for your stay ends when that employment ends, and you would normally need a new sponsor to transfer it. Time spent outside Kuwait is also limited - exceeding it without an official exit permit can cancel the residency under the 2025 rules. Always confirm your situation on the official Ministry of Interior page.

Can I move to Kuwait to look for a private-sector job before I have an offer?+−

No. Article 18 work residency requires a Kuwaiti private-sector employer to sponsor you and obtain the work permit, and you cannot self-apply for it. A genuine job offer and employment relationship with that sponsoring employer must be in place first. Confirm the current rules on the official Ministry of Interior page.

Does Kuwait have a digital nomad or remote-work visa instead of a sponsored job?+−

No. There is no separate digital-nomad visa in Kuwait, and private-sector work residency under Article 18 is sponsor-tied, requiring a Kuwaiti employer to act as your sponsor. Confirm the current routes on the official Ministry of Interior page.

What changed under Kuwait's 2025 residency reform?+−

Kuwait reformed its residency rules under Ministerial Resolution No. 2249 of 2025, in force from 23 December 2025, introducing a tiered residency model, an exit-permit requirement (staying outside Kuwait beyond the permitted period without an official exit permit can cancel your residency), and a requirement to hold health insurance valid for the residency period. All residency remains fixed-term and sponsor-tied, with no permanent residence for expatriates. Verify the current rules on the official Ministry of Interior page.
