Overview
Tanzania does not have an off-the-shelf permanent residence category in the way many countries do - the standard residence permit classes are issued for a fairly short period and renewed. What exists instead is a discretionary, long-tenure route: where a foreign investor's contribution to the economy or to the wellbeing of Tanzanians is of great value, the total validity of their permit may run much longer (the official position notes this can exceed ten years). The power to grant a residence permit, and to extend it on this basis, is vested in the Commissioner General of the Immigration Department, so it is a case-by-case decision rather than an automatic status. Because it confers durable, long-term residence, we treat it as leading to settlement. Good to know: this is not a guaranteed pathway, and it is distinct from Tanzanian citizenship, which is a separate process.

Frequently asked questions
Does Tanzania offer permanent residence?+
Not as a standard, off-the-shelf category. Residence permits are normally issued for a fairly short period and renewed. The closest thing is a discretionary, long-tenure grant for investors whose contribution to Tanzania is of great economic value, where validity may run much longer. Confirm the current position with the Immigration Department.
Is long-tenure residence guaranteed for big investors?+
No. It is a discretionary, case-by-case decision by the Commissioner General of Immigration, based on the economic value of the investment - not an automatic entitlement. We do not quote thresholds; confirm the current rules on the official Immigration Department page.
