Overview
The official English work-permit folder says every employer who wishes to employ an employee with a nationality other than Surinamese must have a work permit, granted by the Permanent Secretary of the Department of Labour. The employer or an authorised representative applies, while the foreign worker supports the application by co-signing it. The folder lists exemption categories, including a foreigner married to a Surinamese citizen, a returning emigrant of Surinamese origin, refugee status, civil-service employment, CARICOM competent citizen status and PSA card holders. It also says the decision is taken within 30 days after submission under the law, with possible extension by another 30 days in special circumstances.
