Digital nomad visa comparison 2026 — remote-work residence routes

Digital nomad visas are a post-2020 visa class. Most require income from non-destination sources, typically 2× to 4× the local minimum wage. Some (Portugal D8, Spain DNV, UAE Virtual Working) are mature routes; others (Croatia, Estonia, Georgia) are in scope beyond the V1 destination set.

Europe digital-nomad cost, income and settlement methodology

The ranking table is a discovery aid, not a generic best-country answer. This method layer keeps the criteria behind each digital-nomad comparison visible.

No generic best-country claim

Portugal, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands answer different eligibility questions. Rank them only after stating the criterion: income floor, paid-away cost, family scaling, renewal path, settlement or tax exposure.

Income evidence is not an application fee

Remote-work income, retained business capital and accommodation cash-flow are evidence or liquidity gates. They must not be merged with consular fees, residence-card fees, insurance, translations or apostilles.

Tax residence is separate from visa eligibility

Visa approval does not settle income-tax, social-security, Beckham-regime, Portuguese ordinary-residence or Dutch/German business-tax treatment. Those are separate jurisdiction-specific checks.

Visa Atlas separates Europe digital-nomad application costs from income evidence: Portugal D8 and Spain Digital Nomad Visa show remote-work income as evidence, not a fee, while Germany freelancer and Netherlands DAFT remain comparator self-employment routes unless a route-specific cost model is present.

Frequently asked questions

What income do digital-nomad visas require?+−

Most set an income floor tied to the local minimum wage — commonly two to four times it. Portugal's D8 asks for roughly four times the Portuguese minimum wage (about €3,680 a month in 2026) and Spain's Digital Nomad Visa is at a similar level. The income must come from clients or an employer outside the destination.

Do digital-nomad visas lead to permanent residence?+−

Some do and some do not. Portugal's D8 and Spain's Digital Nomad Visa count toward permanent residence and citizenship after five years; others are fixed-term routes with no settlement pathway. The "Leads to PR?" column shows which is which.
