Investor visas — residence by investment routes
Investor visas grant residence in exchange for passive or active investment above a prescribed threshold, typically EUR 250k–1m+. Several European Golden Visa programmes have closed or restricted since 2023; Portugal's Golden Visa dropped real-estate investment in 2023 and Spain's Golden Visa closed in April 2025.
Typical characteristics
- Typically EUR 250k–1m+ passive investment, in qualifying funds or businesses.
- Real-estate investment is increasingly excluded (Portugal 2023; Spain closed 2025; Ireland closed 2023).
- Physical-presence requirements vary; some programmes are minimal-stay.
- Often lead to citizenship after 5–10 years.
